DEC 08 | EDITION #24 - Read Time: 8 minutes

Another week, another iteration of Modern Mythos. Last week we soft-launched our Instagram & TikTok accounts. This week, we made some quality-of-life edits to the Thursday newsletter so you can find the info you want a bit faster with more breakdowns and sections.

This upcoming Monday (Dec 11), youā€™ll get a second Modern Mythos newsletter each week. Our Monday editions will be a compilation of my weekly watchlist and are a quicker read - reviews, ratings and provide some deeper insight than our Thursday editions allow. If you have specific recommendations for shows, films or games you want reviewed, now is your time. Send me an email, DM or comment below if this is something youā€™d be interested in!

Based on some big reveals slated for 2025 release, some are saying 2024 feels like a filler yearā€¦similar to a show that does a couple side arc episodesā€¦but I'm not sure I agree. Let's talk about it.

Inside The Edition:

  • Godzilla Minus One thoughts

  • Aquaman 2 looking to bomb

  • GTA VI reveal

  • More trailers than I can count

Mainstream & Independent

šŸŽ„ News from mainstream movies to independent arthouse films

Godzilla Minus One // Toho

Admittedly, this one was completely off my radar and I wasnā€™t planning on checking it out, but I changed my mind after seeing the public praise and Iā€™m glad I didā€¦because Godzilla Minus One fucking rips. If you havenā€™t seen my review yet, go give it a listen. Iā€™ll be breaking down my full review for our first-ever Monday Watchlist newsletter, but I urge you to go see this film over the weekend.

Itā€™s now the top-grossing live-action Japanese Film in NA after opening to $14.3M at the box office. Toho, the filmā€™s distributor, said that theyā€™re working on adding over 2,000 screens this upcoming week and are increasing its showings. Godzilla Minus One has a 97% Critic Score and 98% Audience Score on RT and is dominatingā€¦ this film likely grow as word of mouth continues, per Deadline.

TLDR: Godzilla Minus One is the best Godzilla film weā€™ve ever gotten, a top 5 movie of 2023 (for me) and worth your time.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom // Warner Bros

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is tracking for a $50M opening in what would be a disaster box office turnout.

The first film made $67M the opening weekend but went on to dominate for weeks, so thereā€™s still hope for WBā€¦though Iā€™m almost positive this will be a disaster.

šŸŽ® Updates from the world of gaming & esports

GTA VI // Rockstar Games

Congratulations, you lived to see the first teaser trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI. Welcome back to Vice City.

The game is believed to be facing the biggest release of all time after the trailer hit 91M views in 24 hours on YouTube (currently 126M)ā€¦good for the most views on a non-music video in a single day.

GTA V was released over a decade ago and holds seven Guinness World Record titles, including the highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hoursā€¦they made $815.7M in first-day sales. Nuttyā€¦per USA Today.

It looks brilliant and satiricalā€¦.IGN found that the trailer references some iconic and strange real-life Florida moments. I believe it will push the genre forward similar to Red Dead Redemption 2. GTA VI will launch in 2025.
