KOTFM review, must watch fall movies, OG Fortnite returns, SAG-AFTRA making progress

The Batman is a Halloween movie. Argue a wall.

ā€œOctober 31st. The city streets are crowded for the holidayā€¦even with the rain. Hidden in the chaos is the element, waiting to strike like snakes. But I'm there too. Watching."

- Bruce Wayne, The Batman (2022)

OCT 27 | EDITION #19 - Read Time: 12 minutes

Itā€™s officially spooky season. Iā€™ve seen Killers of the Flower Moon. Iā€™m currently playing Marvelā€™s Spider-Man 2. Halloween is in a few days. I'm still late in sending out the newsletter due to poor planning. All feels right in the world. Letā€™s rock.

Killers of the Flower Moon // Scorsese

To celebrate Killers of the Flower Moon, here are some Martin Scorsese fun facts from the last week:

I loved this film, a technical marvel with star performances across the boardā€¦draped over a dark and harrowing narrative. Review below.

Film & TV Headlines

ā–ŖļøŽ SAG-AFTRA & the Studios have been in talks all week to conclude the strikes through high stress. If a resolution is not found soon, next years blockbusters will be delayed and TV shows could be cancelled. Read.

ā–ŖļøŽ A group of A-list actors (Clooney, Affleck, Stone, Perry Johansson, etc.) proposed a $150M deal to SAG-AFTRA to continue work. Accepting a deal like this would undermine the strike and be more of a bandaid, but cool to see the top talent try to step up. Read.

ā–ŖļøŽ SAG-AFTRA tells its members that they cannot dress up as characters from movies or tv shows from struck companies. This is a weird move and theyā€™re facing some backlash from membersā€¦feels like they might be focusing on the wrong things. Read.

ā–ŖļøŽ Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 2 has been moved to 2025. The film moves off of its original June 28 release date to May 23, 2025. It also, apparantly, is changing titles. Read.

Franchise Headlines

ā–ŖļøŽ Deadpool 3 is leaving its May release date due to the strike delay. There is a small chance Captain America: Brave New World takes this date and leaves July 26. There is no new date confirmed. Read.

ā–ŖļøŽ Gen V has been renewed for Season 2. This show is a massive hit, so itā€™s not surprising to see Amazon quickly order more episodes. See.

ā–ŖļøŽ The Marvels is tracking to hit $70M-$80M for opening weekend. This is significantly lower than the original films release in 2019, though that was juiced by Endgame hype. Read.

ā–ŖļøŽ Fallout, the video game adaptation produced by Amazon, will debut in 2024. This game series will make for a potent TV adaptation due to the post-apocalyptic setting and dark humorā€¦very excited. Read.

Fortnite Chapter 1: Season 5 is back next week

Gaming Headlines

ā–ŖļøŽ The OG Fortnite Map Returns next week, and the hype is growing. Epic Games has confirmed that we will be going back to Chapter 1: Season 5 on November 3. Grab your old squad, weā€™re going home boys. Read.

ā–ŖļøŽ Mega-talent Nickmercs has signed a deal with Kick, the Twitch competitor, to a non-exclusive $10M deal. This is a significant shift of talent in the space as Twitch continues to fade. Read & watch.

ā–ŖļøŽ FaZe Clan has been acquired by the Jerry Jones backed company, GameSquare. FaZe was once the gold standard for a gaming org but has tanked the brand and businses over the last few yearsā€¦Iā€™d bet that GS can bring them back to form. Read.

Best Movies to Watch During The Fall

Back in August, we compiled the Modern Mythos: Summer Collection - a grouping of our communityā€™s favorite movies that feel like Summer. Now it's time to build out a list of our favorite Fall vibes movies.

When I think of Fall, I'm looking for Halloween stuff, sure, but there's also another vibe there. The seasonal change makes me feel like a different man than I was in the Summer - I know that's dramatic, but it's real. Without leaning too hard on the classics, here are some of my picks:

The Batman. The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Star Wars. Good Will Hunting. Dune. Knives Out. Harry Potter: Prisoners of Azkaban. When Harry Met Sally. The Town. Halloweentown. It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. Se7en. The Bourne Trilogy. School of Rock. Superbad.

Good Will Hunting (1997)

Here are some selections that the community has sent me via DM, email or through the void:

Toy Story. When Harry Met Sally. The Goonies. Halloween. The Shining. Dead Poets Society. Remember The Titans. Coco. Clueless. Hocus Pocus. The Thing. The Witch. The Godfather Part 1 & 2. Aliens. Hereditary. Sicario. Little Women.

There's a theme here. Weight, drama, thriller, spooky, cozy, longing, almost cold.. I know you feel it.

What did we miss? Send me your Fall favorites so itā€™s a true community collectionā€¦Iā€™ll add your suggestions to the list and continue to grow it so we have a watchlist every season. Find the collection below. šŸ’Æ

āš” What To Watch

David Fincherā€™s The Social Network

The Social Network (2010) | Drama | Prime Video ($3.89)

As Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg creates the social networking site that would become known as Facebook, he is sued by the twins who claimed he stole their idea and by the co-founder who was later squeezed out of the business.

This isnā€™t a hidden gem or presenting new information, but itā€™s come to my attention that there are still far, far too many people who havenā€™t seen this film so itā€™s a personal mission of mine to change that. The Social Network might be Fincherā€™s best work and itā€™s something we can all connect with. Jesse Eisenberg. Andrew Garfield. Justin Timberlake. 5 stars.

ā€œWe lived on farms, and then we lived in cities, and now we are going to live on the internet.ā€

šŸ“ŗ My Watchlist

Killers of the Flower Moon - Just let Scorsese cook and get the fuck out of the way. Was this long as shit? Yes. Was it heavy? Yes. Did the guy next to me tank a bottle of wine? Also yes. Was I locked in for 3.5 hours? Abso-fucking-lutely. 4.5 stars. Full review here.

Loki S2 E3 - This show is the best thing the MCU has done since the Infinity Saga. Great cast. Great story. Production is better than almost every MCU project. I'm thankful this exists.

Gen V E6 - Ramps up each week, character moments have been fantastic and the world-building is elite. Only two episodes left until the end, which is upsetting.

Marvelā€™s Spider-Man 2 - Iā€™m happy to report that this is every bit as good as the first two installments and makes plenty of improvements. It looks and feels like a true ā€˜next-genā€™ game. This will be the game that kids grow up with and idolize, and I'm jealous.
